The Un & Only

Un-Cabaret

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015 · 50 min

Conversational storytelling sets recorded live in Los Angeles.

The core rule of Beth Lapides’ Un-Cabaret was simple: no punchline setups, no road bits, and no stage armor. Performers were pushed to speak like ordinary people venting in private, trading calculated rhythm for rambling, personal embarrassment.

Mike McDonald recounts the bizarre ordeal of serving as Faye Dunaway’s private comedy coach. Merrill Markoe agonizes over what outfit to wear when confronting ex-partner David Letterman on national television. Elsewhere, Taylor Negron recounts an arrest in Miami, Bob Odenkirk picks apart the indignity of television pitch meetings, and Julia Sweeney unspools an odd story about Christopher Walken’s cat.

Originally assembled on CD in 2002 and reissued digitally by Comedy Dynamics in 2015, the recordings document the show during its runs at West Hollywood’s Luna Park and the Knitting Factory. At the time, confessional storytelling was an overt rebellion against traditional comedy clubs rather than a ubiquitous podcast subgenre.

Not every track carries the momentum of a finished set, but the looser format gives the room genuine friction.
