Stand-up, character monologues, and piano numbers performed for BBC television.

The workout routine in the middle of the show is a striking display of physical timing. Playing Madge, an instructor leading a low-impact exercise class called Fattitude, Wood runs through a continuous aerobic sequence while delivering dialogue without dropping a step or gasping for breath. That stage control anchors the performance. She handles antenatal classes, catalog shopping, and marital fatigue with dry realism, recounting nurses who explain labor by shoving a rubber doll through the neck of a balaclava.

Broadcast by BBC One on Christmas Day in 1994, the special was filmed in a television studio with a live audience, drawing on material honed during a 104-date tour that included fifteen sold-out performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The BBC cut the show down to fifty minutes for television, while an extended eighty-minute edit appeared on VHS. Geoff Posner, her frequent collaborator on sketch television, served as director and producer.

Earlier that autumn, Wood had written and starred opposite Julie Walters in the television film Pat and Margaret. Placing her in the Christmas night lineup signaled the BBC’s trust in her as a solo broad-appeal draw—the space once dominated by Morecambe and Wise.

She carries the staging without guests or a repertory company. Aside from stand-up routines on parenting and domestic life, the hour highlights character portraits and songs at the piano. Madeline the Hairdresser relies on rapid tongue-twisters about provincial salon clients, while “The Ballad of Barry and Freda” catalogs mismatched suburban libidos amid hostess trolleys, uncooperative grouting, and thermal underwear.
