The Chronicles of Federman
ASpecialThing Records · Album · 2015 · 60 min
Thirty years of club sets condensed into a three-disc audio archive.
Wayne Federman’s stand-up runs on dry bewilderment and trivia-minded oddities, like learning in the fourth grade that his first name is also a verb meaning to diminish slowly over time. He picks up an electric ukulele, explains the engineering behind a fast-food taco, and sits at a piano to examine why easy-listening melodies sound so mournful.
Instead of cutting a standard debut record in the 1980s or 1990s, Federman waited until 2015 to put anything out commercially. When he finally did, he bypassed the usual hour-long format entirely, releasing a 41-track, three-volume retrospective gathered from cassette and soundboard tapes spanning 31 years. By that point, he was widely recognized as a dependable character actor in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and a former head monologue writer for Jimmy Fallon, but his stand-up had never been preserved in a single release.
The tracks move in chronological order from 1984 to 2015. The earliest discs catch him in New York boom-era rooms like Catch a Rising Star, The Comic Strip, and Carolines, delivering brisk setups about the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Later discs show his style shifting toward looser, longer premises as he moved to West Coast alternative rooms like Largo, the Upright Citizens Brigade, and the NerdMelt Showroom.
Issued by ASpecialThing Records with liner notes by Judd Apatow, the collection landed on year-end lists from Paste and NPR’s Bullseye, functioning as an accidental record of how club comedy transformed across three decades.
