Maria Bamford has spent decades being heralded as a comic’s comic, but her 2020 hour is her most structurally conventional stand-up performance to date. Rather than performing for a crowd of two in her parents’ living room or whispering to strangers at a bowling alley, she stands on a traditional stage in Los Angeles before a standard theater audience. The central hook is that she has been feeling too mentally stable to write her usual brand of hypomanic, psychic-fracture material. Instead, she turns her hyper-specific voice work and elastic facial expressions toward the mundanities of marital domesticity and the absurdity of self-improvement.

Released by Comedy Dynamics after Netflix declined to pick it up, the hour shows a comedian who is more contented than in her previous specials but no less odd. Notable bits include her and her husband role-playing “gentrification” and “the living wage” to spice up their sex life, and a detailed breakdown of her refusal to deliver an unpaid commencement address at her alma mater, the University of Minnesota. She also covers her octogenarian financial advisor, Elliott, and compares her search for leadership to her blind, deaf pug getting stuck in the kitchen. The independent release was warmly received by critics, who noted that Bamford’s newfound contentment and stability did not dull her eccentric edge.
