Welfare In Disguise
YouTube · 2023
A cynical road veteran targets progressive hypocrisy and modern anxieties.
Zack Hammond operates on the fringes of the club circuit, the kind of comic who willingly admits to working pizza joints and volunteer fire halls just to keep the lights on. For his debut filmed hour, he leans into that blue-collar obscurity, opening with a bit that frames the current state of the nation as the “series finale of America.” He is not looking to comfort the crowd; instead, he treats the stage like a platform for direct, slightly mean confrontation, stating outright that he just wants to hear some noise in the room, positive or negative.
The hour was recorded in July 2022 at Karl Hall in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and released by comedy distributor Four by Three on YouTube in March 2023. At this stage of his career, Hammond had been grinding on the road for nearly fifteen years and had self-released four stand-up albums, building a reputation for a cynical, confrontational style. He directs his ire at everyone from progressive white liberals whose heads are up their asses to doctors who treat adult women wanting tubal ligations as breeding stock.
Hammond’s jokes have a hard, blunt edge. He riffs on high school teen pregnancies that produce thirty-year-old grandmothers and the awkwardness of adolescent boys wearing skin-tight Lycra wrestling singlets. There are no grand theatrical statements here, just a veteran road comic working a low-ceiling basement venue, challenging the audience to either laugh or boo.
