A Whole Lifetime with Jamie Demetriou

Jamie Demetriou begins his Netflix sketch hour in the womb, playing a long-fingered embryo receiving a musical warning about the horrors of human existence. From there, the show moves chronologically through life’s stages, giving Demetriou a canvas for the same awkward, marble-mouthed physical comedy he honed in Stath Lets Flats. The best moments trade on social embarrassment and performative modern behavior. In one sketch, a teenage couple stares at their phones, deeply repulsed by the physical mechanics of sex but desperate to go through with it to protect their social media profiles.

By 2023, Demetriou had wrapped his BAFTA-winning series and established himself as one of Britain’s most distinct comedic actors. For his first major Netflix solo project, he leaned heavily into surrealism and parody, including “Kiss Villa,” a parody of Love Island where only two of the contestants are actually attractive, and a segment where a best man makes a desperate, psychologically damaging attempt to mimic the hollow banter of a stag do. The production, directed by Andrew Gaynord and produced by BBC Studios, divided critics. While some found the R&B-influenced musical numbers and loose, womb-to-tomb framing device a bit disjointed, others praised Demetriou’s physical commitment, particularly in a wordless sequence where he repeatedly attempts to walk through an office door. The project went on to earn two BAFTA TV nominations in 2024.
