The Inside Outtakes

Bo Burnham’s follow-up to his isolation musical is less of a scrapheap of deleted scenes and more of an autopsy of his own obsessive creative process. Uploaded to YouTube on the one-year anniversary of the original project, these outtakes strip away the polished illusion of his lockdown bedroom, exposing the endless trial-and-error, the technical frustration, and the physical exhaustion that went into making it.

Interspersed with the behind-the-scenes footage are finished songs and sketches that could have easily anchored the original release. There is a parody of a self-appointed “free-speech” comedy podcast, a synth-pop fight about dumpling math in a long-term relationship, and “The Chicken,” a surprisingly melancholic piano ballad about a bird trying to cross the road. Burnham also targets the very concept of the content pipeline, staging a mock press conference for the “Inside Cinematic Universe” that mocks the entertainment industry’s relentless demand for more material.

Filmed in the same Los Angeles guest house between March 2020 and May 2021, the hour-long compilation was praised by critics as a cohesive companion piece rather than a cynical marketing exercise. It captures the exhausting reality of the DIY creative process, showing how much effort it takes to make isolation look effortless.
