Live from the Stonewall Inn

Adam Sank

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015 · 45 min

Unfiltered club comedy about gay dating before and after smartphones.

Gay hookup culture before smartphones required patience, whether that meant sitting through dial-up AOL chats or burning four dollars a minute on 1-900 phone sex lines. Adam Sank approaches the shift toward Grindr with the weary familiarity of someone who survived both, building to an absurd routine that imagines the disgraced puppeteer behind Elmo leaving casual personal ads on gay party lines. Recorded on September 24, 2015, in the upstairs performance space of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, the 44-minute set marked Sank’s debut comedy album after twelve years working New York comedy clubs, cabaret rooms, and satellite radio. Rather than angling for crossover television appeal, the material leans entirely into frank club jokes about awkward dirty talk, male grooming habits, and questioning his dog’s sexual orientation. Comedy Dynamics released the audio in December 2015, sending it to the top of the digital comedy charts on iTunes and Amazon.
