The Half Hour

Ali Siddiq

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Suburban culture shock and unsettling kids, delivered at an unbothered pace.

Ali Siddiq talks like a man leaning over a fence, entirely unhurried by the usual rush of television comedy. While most comics treat a 22-minute showcase like a sprint against the commercial break clock, Siddiq slows things down to talk about moving into a suburban neighborhood where neighbors obsess over dandelions, eat trail mix, and tumble off roofs attempting amateur handyman repairs.

Filmed at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans, the performance aired in September 2016 during the fifth season of Comedy Central’s The Half Hour. Siddiq had worked clubs for years, but he had only recently surfaced on national television after an appearance on This Is Not Happening.

The set turns on domestic adjustments. Siddiq contrasts his own background with the softer realities of raising children in the suburbs, side-eying his competitive daughter and worrying about his young son’s unnerving whispering habit. He also takes aim at Father’s Day, arguing that fathers get relegated to dollar-store afterthought status while mothers receive massive celebrations.

Comedy Central commissioned his first hour special off the back of this taping, sending him inside a Texas county jail to film two years later.
