The Prison Manual

Ali Siddiq

800 Pound Gorilla · Album · 2017

Unwritten etiquette and survival stories from years inside Texas state prisons.

Ali Siddiq approaches six years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice not with trauma or gangster posturing, but with the practicality of an office veteran explaining company policy. The premise running through the album is simple: prison operates on strict etiquette, where misreading a room or ignoring an unwritten rule carries immediate consequences.

Released as an audio record by 800 Pound Gorilla Records, the 47-minute set caught Siddiq as his profile was expanding beyond the club circuit following his viral prison riot appearance on Comedy Central. It captures him working through the deliberate autobiographical material that eventually formed the backbone of his later long-form series.

The stories start with an arrest at a gas station and the confusion of arranging bail before moving onto the state yard. His sharpest observation concerns the illusion of size on the tier, arguing that muscular stature means very little compared to a quiet inmate who has already survived multiple stabbings. He also recounts time spent at the Clements Unit and crossing paths with former NFL star Dexter Manley at the Torres Unit in Hondo.
