Ricky Gervais spends much of his time on stage telling the audience that they are too sensitive, doubling down on the provocative, contrarian persona that has defined his late-career stand-up. While the central conceit of the hour is the eventual end of human civilization, which Gervais greets with a shrug, the performance functions primarily as a delivery mechanism for taboo subjects. He targets corporate diversity training, the overuse of the word “fascist,” and the “Last Wish” foundation, occasionally pivoting to more traditional observational material comparing slugs to snails.

Recorded at the London Palladium, the set was released on Netflix on Christmas Day, 2023. At this point in his career, having wrapped his series After Life, Gervais was operating at a scale where his tours were record-breaking events. The Armageddon run set a Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing single stand-up gig by bringing in $1.79 million at the Hollywood Bowl. Although the special won the inaugural Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, critical reception was heavily split. Reviewers frequently dismissed the performance as lazy, arguing that Gervais favored easy playground-level shock value over genuine comedic craft.
