At this point in his career, having wrapped his series After Life, Gervais was operating at a scale where his tours were record-breaking events. The Armageddon run set a Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing single stand-up gig by bringing in $1.79 million at the Hollywood Bowl. Although the special won the inaugural Golden Globe for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, critical reception was heavily split. Reviewers frequently dismissed the performance as lazy, arguing that Gervais favored easy playground-level shock value over genuine comedic craft.
