The Half Hour

Beth Stelling

Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min

Measured deadpan stand-up on terrible boyfriends and regrettable tattoos.

The appeal of Beth Stelling’s stand-up is the disconnect between how calm she sounds and how unhinged the situations she describes actually are. She talks through getting an ex-boyfriend’s name tattooed on her lower back or the indignities of dating stoners without raising her voice or rushing her rhythm, letting the awkwardness sit until the crowd catches up.

Taped at the Royale in Boston during the fourth season of Comedy Central’s showcase series, the set caught Stelling after her transition from the Chicago scene to Los Angeles. She had already logged appearances on late-night television, but this recording provided enough breathing room for extended narrative setups, including a breakdown of receiving an absurdly expensive sex toy in a comedy festival gift bag.

The set doubled as the core of her 2015 album Simply the Beth, which Vulture ranked among the year’s best stand-up releases.
