Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 3

Bill Hicks

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015

An unvarnished 1993 Florida club set recorded following a terminal diagnosis.

Bill Hicks suggests that anti-abortion activists picket cemeteries instead of medical clinics if they truly want to protect corpses. Delivered with tired exasperation, the premise sets the tone for an audio recording that plays less like a polished routine and more like a private reckoning with a sleepy Florida comedy club.

Recorded on June 20, 1993, at an open mic night in West Palm Beach, the tape captures Hicks on the exact morning he received a diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer. He never mentions the illness to the audience. Instead, he channels his anger outward, treating mainstream American culture as an insult to basic common sense.

Prop comics take an early beating, with Hicks reducing Gallagher to a grown man making a living off broken fruit while dismissing Carrot Top as a sign of intellectual rot. He tears into military recruitment standards, arguing that push-up tests are pointless when the only qualification for sitting in a foxhole should be the foolishness required to volunteer. Familiar riffs on psilocybin, organized religion, and abortion appear without the theatrical polish of his London shows, leaving behind only the friction between a tired satirist and an unenthusiastic room.

Comedy Dynamics issued the seventy-minute audio decades later as part of an archival series of his tour recordings.
