Love, Laughter And Truth

Bill Hicks

Comedy Dynamics · Album · 2015 · 50 min

Archival cassette recordings of loose club sets from the early nineties.

Most archival releases rely on polished soundboard recordings, but this set captures Bill Hicks through the low fidelity of his personal tape recorder. The material works because it pulls him away from the pulpit and puts him back into the trenches of comedy clubs, arguing with indifferent rooms and poking holes in field sobriety tests. When recounting a roadside stop, he points out that reciting the alphabet backwards is an absurd sobriety test because nobody learns it that way; you spend your entire childhood learning the melody forward, practicing your whole life to fail.

The audio pulls from shows recorded between 1990 and 1993 across Denver, San Ramon, West Palm Beach, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh. Hicks taped the sets on portable gear for his own reference before his death in 1994. Assembled by his estate and issued on CD in 2002 before Comedy Dynamics put it into wider circulation in 2015, the 44-minute compilation functions as an odds-and-ends drawer alongside his studio-released albums.

The audio quality is audibly degraded. Even with digital cleanup to remove pops and surface hiss, volume dips and room noise persist throughout the transfers.

What makes the tapes compelling is how much lighter Hicks sounds when he is not building toward a grand philosophy. Between bits on screaming children on airplanes, smoking in heaven, and the mechanics of dance clubs, he comes across as a road comic refining jokes rather than a counterculture prophet.
