Live at Edinburgh Usher Hall

Billy Connolly

PolyGram · 1995 · 85 min

Billy Connolly on home turf after weeks touring across Scotland.

Connolly rarely bothers with standard setup-punchline rhythm, preferring to throw himself into sprawling physical tangents that mimic an excited conversation spinning out of control. A routine about Catholic doctrine and the rhythm method treats church guidance as sheer biological lunacy, while his breakdown of the Winter Olympic luge reduces the entire sport to suicidal madness on a cafeteria tray.

The performance was taped during an eight-night stand at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall that capped his 1994 Scottish tour, arriving on television and home video in 1995 alongside the BBC travelogue series World Tour of Scotland. Connolly spent that period balancing mainstream film roles in Indecent Proposal and Disney’s Pocahontas with massive stage runs. At forty-three minutes, this broadcast is considerably leaner and faster than the two-hour marathons he typically staged in London theaters during the same era.

Much of the set leans on local familiarity and bodily discomfort. He riffs on Scotland’s horizontal rain and gale-force wind, the unavoidable eccentric who chooses the seat next to you on an empty bus, and the wiry pub regulars in Glasgow whose durability defies anatomy.
