Comedy Central Live
Comedy Central UK · 2019 · 30 min
Short-form stand-up about failed teenage gangs and food marketing.
Darren Harriott treats his own youthful delusions of toughness with the skepticism of a very tired older brother. The Birmingham-born comedian pairs a relaxed, conversational style with an eye for the absurdities of modern media, food marketing, and teenage posturing.
The performance, broadcast in June 2019 as part of Comedy Central UK’s series of stand-up specials, caught Harriott at a high-water mark in his career. He had recently secured an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination for Best Show and was transitioning from a rising newcomer into a familiar face on British television.
Harriott moves quickly through his material, offering a skeptical look at food controversies like chef Jamie Oliver’s “punchy jerk rice” and the commercial reality of reggae reggae sauce. The peak of the set recounts his adolescent attempt to form a local street gang named the Terror Clan Killers, which they spelled with a ‘z’. His recounting of their attempt to order menacing custom hoodies, only to have their tough-guy facade completely broken by a maternal T-shirt shop employee, turns a potential street-crime story into a silly exercise in failed branding.
