Standing Up

Brian Regan

Comedy Central Records · 2016 · 50 min

Brian Regan works through traffic signs, greeting cards, and DMV rules.

Brian Regan grips an imaginary steering wheel at ten and two, panicked by a highway trailer warning drivers that it carries show horses. The routine pivots on physical frustration, contrasting the pampered horses with roadside donkeys who simply refused to apply themselves. He paces the stage, twisting his face into the look of someone pushed past the limit by minor road signs.

Originally taped in April 2007 at the Barclay Theatre in Irvine, California, the 43-minute set served as Regan’s first formal special for Comedy Central before later arriving across digital services. At the time, he was one of the few theater headliners operating almost entirely outside the sitcom machine, building a national following through relentless road dates and recurring late-night appearances on David Letterman’s stage.

The material focuses on everyday bureaucracy and commercial absurdities. He reads the California driver’s handbook and questions the contingency clause requiring an alternate fingerprint for applicants who lack thumbs, then walks through the greeting card aisle trying to decipher the manufactured sincerity in sympathy notes. He wraps up the set with a routine about caterpillars liquefying inside chrysalises and the awkward appraisals on Antiques Roadshow.
