Footprints on the Moon

Chad Daniels

800 Pound Gorilla · Album · 2017

Parenting comedy stripped of gentle lessons and domestic sentimentality.

Most comics talk about their children as baffling disruptions or small miracles. Chad Daniels approaches teenagers like a border dispute, operating with the abrasive certainty of an older brother who got stuck paying the mortgage.

Released by 800 Pound Gorilla Records in early 2017, the 53-minute audio set became a massive streaming success. Without an East Coast network push or an hour on cable, it reached number two on the Billboard comedy chart and went on to become the most-streamed stand-up release of the year on Pandora.

The material works because Daniels does not play the defeated, befuddled suburban dad. Routines about bathroom rules, unbearable school choir concerts, and misplaced laundry move with a clipped Midwestern cadence that sounds like a frustrated coach running drills. When he issues household mandates or argues with his kids, the humor hinges on his outright refusal to pretend that family life is a gentle, noble calling.
