Fresh off an Oscar win for Ghost, Whoopi Goldberg steps onto the stage at South Central L.A.’s Comedy Act and immediately proves she hasn’t softened for Hollywood. Acting as both host and headliner of a variety showcase, she targets the political friction of 1991, taking aim at former LAPD Chief Daryl Gates, the Rodney King fallout, and the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination.
Aired on HBO, the hour functions as a community-focused event rather than a standard solo set. Goldberg shares the stage with rising comics Jedda Jones and Chris Thomas. Music also takes up a significant portion of the runtime, featuring the a cappella group Rockapella alongside the 80-member Crenshaw High School Elite Choir.
