Rocky LaPorte brings his heavy Brooklyn accent and former-truck-driver pragmatism to the Comedy Central Presents stage. He works clean, leaning on a baffled, regular-guy persona that turns mundane memories into punchlines. The standout material here centers on his early years, including the logistics of being held back in school and the disappointing animal exhibits at the Staten Island Zoo.

Aired in 2005 during the show’s ninth season, the half-hour arrived during a productive stretch for the road-tested club veteran. He had recently earned a rare standing ovation on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and around the time this set debuted, LaPorte was performing for U.S. troops in Iraq alongside Drew Carey and securing a supporting role in the Tim Allen vehicle The Shaggy Dog.
