Comedy Central Presents

John Edward Szeles treats the title of comedy magician like a threat. Performing as his manic, headband-wearing alter ego, he sabotages the conventions of stage magic through fake gore, failed illusions, and open hostility. The actual sleight of hand is secondary to the spectacle of a performer pulling his own act apart at the seams.

Filmed for the fifth season premiere of Comedy Central Presents in 2001, the half-hour set aligns with the launch of his Las Vegas residency at the Golden Nugget. That booking would keep him headlining the Strip for over a decade. The performance relies heavily on audience interaction, dragging a nervous volunteer onstage to endure his erratic pacing. Between the visual gags and the crowd work, he finds time to execute his mystic snowball of India routine.
