Long before he became one of the internet’s most ubiquitous podcasting voices, Theo Von brought his distinct, meandering logic to a tight cable showcase. He spends his twenty minutes airing specific grievances about the PT Cruiser convertible, dreaming up the absolute best ways to spend money, and recounting a bizarre text-based friendship he cultivated with a total stranger.

Filmed at The Royale in Boston in early 2012, the performance aired as part of the inaugural season of Comedy Central’s rebranded The Half Hour. At the time, Von was actively shaking off the legacy of his MTV reality television past. He was building a new audience through his CrankTexts blog, where he messaged random phone numbers for content, and hosting a daily recap show for Yahoo. The broadcast ended up as one of the network’s highest-rated half-hours of the season, helping legitimize his pivot to full-time stand-up.
