Laurie Elliott brings an unpretentious energy to the stage, leaning hard into physical goofiness and a raspy delivery that doesn’t mind looking silly. Her stand-up relies on a feral charm, punctuating her punchlines with a manic laugh and treating self-deprecating dating mishaps and family quirks with a total lack of vanity.
The set was filmed as part of the seventh season of the Canadian stand-up showcase Comedy Now! on August 22, 2003, at the Masonic Temple in Toronto, and aired on CTV in May 2004. At this point in her career, Elliott was a rising name in the Toronto alternative scene, known for her sketch work in the duo Kevlor-2000 and appearances on The Red Green Show. The half-hour broadcast capturing her early solo stand-up helped establish the cartoonish, high-energy style that would soon make her a regular on MuchMusic’s Video on Trial and earn her multiple Canadian Comedy Awards.
