Neal Brennan begins his fourth special with some disappointing news for fans of his previous, depression-heavy hours: he is actually feeling pretty great. Having tried everything from transcranial magnetic stimulation to fifteen Ayahuasca trips, the co-creator of Chappelle’s Show has managed to pull himself out of his clinical malaise. But while his brain chemistry has leveled out, his general contempt for modern life remains fully intact.

Filmed at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, this self-directed 53-minute set features Brennan pacing before a web of glowing, synapse-like cords as he takes aim at the absurdities of the self-improvement and hustle economies.

He argues that extreme greatness is inherently pathological, making a compelling case for why we should never want top-tier athletes or historic geniuses to possess stable mental health. After all, people who are truly exceptional at one thing are usually absolute disasters at everything else.

Between his theories on high-achieving psychopaths, Brennan weaves in quick observations on cryptocurrency, the exhausting performativity of social media “journeys,” and why dorks should run the world. He even shares a brief foray into using ChatGPT to write stand-up material, which gifted him an automated, aggressive opening line that he happily delivers to the crowd.
