Before The Wall Goes Up

Dennis Gaxiola

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 47 min

Clean club stand-up about church upbringings and Mexican-American identity.

Dennis Gaxiola knows how he looks to strangers: entirely Mexican, right up until someone asks him a question in Spanish and gets a blank stare in return. He builds his routine around that mismatch, leaning into the contrast between cultural expectations, a strict upbringing by a traveling preacher, and his own background in the Air Force.

Filmed at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, the 47-minute set was recorded under the direction of Isaac Halasima and released in 2017. Gaxiola had spent the preceding two decades performing on television lineups like BET’s ComicView, Que Locos, and Martin Lawrence’s First Amendment Stand-Up, alongside appearances on Paul Rodriguez’s Latin Kings of Comedy tour. By the time he stepped in front of the Utah audience, his timing was tuned for maximum club efficiency.

While the title nods to the border wall debates in the news that year, the material avoids political posturing. Gaxiola focuses on domestic friction instead: marrying his Puerto Rican wife twice, explaining his Jewish-Mexican nephew, and discovering that turning forty changes what his body can handle. He also looks back on growing up broke enough that family road trips required continuous mechanical luck just to make it home.
