Doing My Time

Before Jim Gaffigan became a touring act capable of filling arenas, he was a club comedian honing a self-deprecating stage presence. Released as a CD and DVD package in late 2004, Doing My Time represents his first major-label release with Comedy Central Records, capturing him at a transition point in his career. This material bridges his early club days and the mainstream success that would follow with 2006’s Beyond the Pale. The live album portion was recorded at Giggles Comedy Club in Seattle in August 2004, featuring early iterations of the food-obsessed routines that defined his career, including his first recorded riff on Hot Pockets, alongside bits about manatees, marriage, and recessive genes. On stage, Gaffigan relies heavily on his signature high-pitched whispered voice—an interior monologue of a fictional audience member critiquing his performance in real time. Because this was a hybrid release, the accompanying DVD acts as a retrospective of his television work, containing his 2000 Comedy Central Presents showcase and two international performances from The World Stands Up. Reviews from the era noted that the whispered voice made for a challenging audio-only experience, but the collection preserves his earliest material before he transitioned fully to theaters.
