Double Negative (Children)

Ari Shaffir frames childlessness as an active victory over a biological trap. Filmed at Cap City Comedy Club in Austin, Texas, this first half of a two-part Netflix release targets the societal expectation to reproduce. Instead of the grand, wide-angle aesthetic of a theater, Shaffir keeps things inside a dim, crowded club. He speaks directly to the audience with the casual cynicism of someone trying to convince his married friends to leave their spouses.

Much of the set hinges on a friend’s Tinder hookup that resulted in an unexpected pregnancy. Shaffir uses the anecdote to pick apart the misery of modern domesticity, cataloging the daily horrors of screaming toddlers in restaurants and questioning the logic of adoption. The tone is unapologetically petty, refusing to offer the usual redemptive, ‘but kids are worth it’ cave at the end.

The special debuted in 2017 during a transitional phase for Shaffir, dropping right as his departure from hosting Comedy Central’s storytelling series This Is Not Happening was announced. Rather than transitioning to theaters like his peers, he doubled down on the club environment to maintain the low-stakes, high-friction intimacy that his stand-up relies on.
