Out Of Ideas

Drew Allen

Comedy Dynamics · 2017 · 46 min

Clean stand-up built on mild paranoia, clothes shopping, and low self-esteem.

Shopping for clothes during an unearned burst of self-esteem is an avoidable catastrophe. Drew Allen insists people should only browse racks when feeling mildly inadequate, because a momentary good mood tricks you into buying loud shirts and aggressive shorts you will never have the nerve to wear on a Tuesday.

Filmed at the Dry Bar Comedy club in downtown Provo, Utah, the 46-minute set arrived in early 2017 as the second installment of the platform’s initial run. Allen, who had spent the previous several years working Utah stages and leading the student comedy troupe Humor U, fits naturally into the venue’s strictly clean format.

He treats the lack of profanity not as a limitation, but as the proper setting for quiet neurosis. Rather than manufacturing theatrical outrage, Allen details bowling alley dates, botched breakups, and the perils of office plants with the flat calm of an accountant reviewing poorly kept books.
