The 1st Farewell Tour

Jim Davidson

Pickwick Video · 1994 · 70 min

Jim Davidson drops his family-friendly television routine for uncut theatre stand-up.

Backed by a live band and backing singers, Jim Davidson operates entirely outside the boundaries of his mainstream television work. He treats the theatre stage as an old-school working-men’s club, pacing through routines about domestic friction, sexual mishaps, and seaside vulgarity.

In 1994, Davidson occupied an unusual space in British popular culture. On Saturday evenings, he hosted the snooker gameshow Big Break to massive ratings on BBC One, projecting an accessible, cheeky cockney persona. His touring circuit was where that veneer disappeared, replaced by an uncensored, 18-rated set tailored for ticket buyers who felt television had become too sanitized. The tongue-in-cheek farewell title poked fun at rock star retirement tours, giving him an excuse to mount a full variety production without actually leaving showbusiness.

Released direct to video on VHS in November 1994, the show found a steady commercial audience. It spent months on the UK official video sales charts, holding court alongside bestsellers from Roy Chubby Brown and Jethro during the peak of Britain’s stand-up video market.
