Live at City Hall

Roy Chubby Brown

PolyGram Video · 1994 · 75 min

Working-men's club stand-up filmed at Newcastle City Hall.

Roy Chubby Brown walks out in a patchwork suit, leather flying helmet, and goggles, greeted by several thousand Geordies chanting that he is a fat bastard. He shouts right back, settling into a barrage of working-men’s club filth built on sheer velocity.

Recorded at Newcastle City Hall, the performance was submitted to the BBFC as Live at City Hall before PolyGram Video issued it in November 1994 under the title Jingle Bollocks.

Television executives refused to broadcast him, which proved financially meaningless. By 1994, Brown was an annual retail phenomenon, moving hundreds of thousands of VHS tapes every autumn to buyers who treated his 18-rated releases as routine Christmas presents.

The set sticks closely to his usual territory: rapid gags about bad marriages, vasectomies, and bodily functions, broken up by stints at the piano bashing out crude musical parodies.
