A Big Slice

Jo Brand

BMG Video · 1994 · 60 min

Deadpan feminist observations and domestic cynicism from early-nineties British stand-up.

Brand takes a deliberate hatchet to nineties lifestyle media, opening with the absurdity of women’s magazines that repackage marriage panic under modern buzzwords. Her centerpiece breakdown of a Cosmopolitan article captures the mood: advice framed around female empowerment that somehow suggests learning quantum physics solely to chat during oral sex.

By 1994, Jo Brand was transitioning from the alternative comedy circuit toward mainstream television, having recently launched her Channel 4 series Through the Cakehole. This solo performance marked a shift away from the rigid, stone-faced delivery of her earliest club sets. Instead of maintaining a sullen wall, she adopts a chattier rhythm, smiling through the laughs while keeping the underlying cynicism intact.

Much of the set revolves around bad dates, smoking habits, body standards, and the general misery of domestic life. She refuses to rush any of it, leaning into lengthy pauses and trusting the audience to meet her deadpan pace.

Recorded and issued on VHS in 1994 by Stone Ranger Productions, the title had a run on the UK special interest video charts before Channel 4 aired it as a television special in 1996.
