What Now?

Kevin Hart

Universal Studios · 2016 · 60 min

Kevin Hart takes arena-sized paranoia into an NFL football stadium.

Kevin Hart works best when he admits to being an unrepentant coward. Facing down a suburban raccoon standing upright on two feet outside his patio door, sending his seven-year-old son into a pitch-black driveway to take out the trash, or calculating the exact injury threshold where he would abandon his partner after an animal attack, his core persona is a wealthy man terrified of almost everything.

Filmed on August 30, 2015, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the show put him in front of roughly 53,000 people, making him the first comedian to headline an NFL stadium solo. By the time the film reached theaters in October 2016, Hart had already transitioned into a dependable Hollywood draw through movies like Central Intelligence and Ride Along 2.

The concert film opens with a fifteen-minute spy spoof co-directed by Tim Story, pairing Hart with Halle Berry and Don Cheadle in a poker game that mainly serves to justify an action budget before he runs down the stadium tunnel. On stage, director Leslie Small backs him with giant LED screens projecting digital animations alongside his stories.

The set covers his terror while watching The Conjuring, awkward encounters in airport bathrooms, and his worry that private schooling softened his children, punctuated by his young son politely asking for mayonnaise. Reviews noted that the writing relied heavily on familiar tropes from his previous arena tours, but his physical commitment kept the massive venue engaged.
