Frantic self-defense scaled up to fill a football stadium.

He starts pacing before he finishes the setup. The shape of a typical bit puts him backed into a corner, completely in the wrong, defending his actions with mounting exasperation. He widens his eyes, speeds up his cadence, and acts out both sides of an argument while his dignity slowly evaporates. He plays the tough guy right up until the exact second the tough guy gets scared of an aggressive bird or a noise in the driveway.

He scaled standup to the size of arena rock. You go to a football stadium to see him along with tens of thousands of other people. The comedy has to fill the space, which means the punchlines require his whole body and the premises are loud. He operates as an enterprise, a star who still tours because the live shows are the engine for the whole machine.

The tension in his later specials comes from trying to keep that original scared-guy panic while living in a vastly different tax bracket. The stories shift from bad apartments to gated estates, but the target remains the same. The bits land hardest when he gets punished for his own misplaced confidence. When he tries to dispense sincere life advice, the set slows down. When he acts out his own kids dismissing his authority, the frantic energy has a place to go.

The blockbuster movies and massive ad campaigns are the context for the standup now. The crowd shows up expecting the fast-talking, exasperated guy from the posters, and he delivers exactly that version of himself.
