I'm Sorry, But I Won't Apologize

Kjell Bjorgen

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 50 min

Deadpan club comedy about Scandinavian names and quiet family indignities.

Kjell Bjorgen opens with the burden of his name. His parents were named John and Jean, standard midwestern handles, yet they gave him a Norwegian moniker that baffled every substitute teacher taking roll call. It plays less like personal trauma and more like an annoying clerical inconvenience that followed him into adulthood.

Filmed at the Dry Bar Comedy club in Provo, Utah, the 35-minute set caught Bjorgen after nearly two decades working the club circuit. A Minneapolis native who began stand-up in Los Angeles in the early 2000s, he had spent years on the road, including a stint opening for Lewis Black and appearances on Comedy Central.

Dry Bar operates under strict clean constraints, but Bjorgen adapts naturally to the room. He leans into unhurried self-deprecation, talking about antidepressant weight gain pointed out by his nephew, growing up with a twin brother, and the stubborn instinct to double down on an obvious lie once caught.
