Knockout

Ossia Dwyer spent her early career juggling stand-up in the Cincinnati scene with a day job as an engineer. For her first short-form special, Knockout, she bypassed the traditional club stage altogether, performing inside the Bryant Street Barber Shop in Pittsburgh. The setting fits the performance—no-frills, low-ceilinged, and intimate enough that she can comfortably overshare about birth control, gynecological exams, and her own laziness in the face of political activism.

Dwyer’s style leans on contrasting a sweet, dry delivery with bleak observations. She offers an unglamorous view of her home state of Vermont, replacing the postcard image of Ben & Jerry’s with snowmobiles in school parking lots and camo prom dresses. She explains why she missed the women’s march to host a “fancy boy pamper party” for her fiancé, and questions why dogs get cheese with their pills while women just get hormonal side effects. Dwyer also works her day job into the performance, bringing a logical, math-minded frustration to the chaos of sex education and dating.
