Louis C.K. opens his tenth self-released stand-up special by explaining that he lacks the kind of confidence required to wear white pants, a wardrobe choice that demands an optimism about one’s digestive tract that he simply does not possess. This sets the tone for a set that is largely preoccupied with bodily decay, moral hypocrisy, and the slow contraction of a person’s worldview as they age.

Filmed at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood in early January 2023, the hour was released on C.K.’s website that April. It serves as a more polished, tightly edited studio counterpart to his live-streamed Madison Square Garden gig, Back to the Garden, utilizing much of the same material but concluding with a completely different sequence of jokes.

Much of the set is built around elaborate, uncomfortable thought experiments designed to poke at modern moral certainties. C.K. argues that the abortion industry is a great job creator, analyzes the strange biblical account of Jesus cursing a cranky fig tree, and details the speed with which early humans invented slavery. He also admits his reluctant agreement with Donald Trump’s theory that the human body has a finite amount of energy like a battery, and looks at how his aging body has turned simple tasks into major hazards.

While some fans and critics felt the hour lacked the tight cohesion of his immediate post-hiatus releases, Sincerely Louis CK and Sorry, the performance shows C.K. leaning further into a dark, misanthropic outlook. It is the work of a comedian who has stopped trying to make himself look good on stage, preferring instead to see how far he can push an audience with thoughts he probably should have kept to himself.
