Talkin' Shit

Martin Lawrence

EastWest Records · Album · 1993 · 47 min

Early club stand-up from the peak of Martin Lawrence's television breakout.

Martin Lawrence built his early reputation on unapologetic bluster and relentless speed, and his 1993 audio debut captures that rhythm before arena staging took over. The centerpiece of the set is an agonizing moral calculation over whether to fight Mike Tyson if the heavyweight champion slapped your girlfriend. Lawrence works every angle of the dilemma, weighing basic pride against guaranteed hospitalization until sheer self-preservation wins out.

Other routines follow that same instinct for survival. He details a visit to Eddie Murphy’s mansion, where the scale of the wealth makes him nervous, riffs on the differences between Black and white parenting, and dedicates nearly half the run time to a sequence of explicit bedroom mishaps and sexual bravado.

Recorded live at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and The Funnybone in Philadelphia, the 47-minute set was released by EastWest Records in September 1993. Lawrence was in the middle of a massive run: his Fox sitcom was entering its second season, and his hosting role on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam had turned him into cable’s most visible stand-up emcee.

Contemporary reviews noted that an audio-only release stripped out the rubber-faced mugging and physical momentum that carried his live shows. Still, the record found buyers, reaching number ten on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 76 on the Billboard 200.
