Shut Up
Comedy Central Records · Album · 2015 · 50 min
Michelle Buteau's debut comedy album recorded live at Union Hall.
Michelle Buteau treats the microphone like a back-booth catch-up with an old friend, whether she is describing the physical distortion of holding in gas around a new partner or recounting the shock of discovering the Dutch tradition of Zwarte Piet after marrying a man from the Netherlands.
Recorded at Union Hall in Brooklyn and released by Comedy Central Records in September 2015, Shut Up served as Buteau’s debut stand-up album. It arrived the same weekend her half-hour special aired on Comedy Central, right around the time VH1 canceled Big Morning Buzz Live, where she had spent a year as a co-host.
She had spent over a decade working New York clubs before recording this hour, having first stepped onstage in 2001 after overnight television news production burned her out.
The tracks move through early marriage, trips to Utah, and European beach culture. Buteau keeps the energy loose and direct, leaning on conversational timing and disbelief rather than rigid setup-punch structures.
