Marc Maron is at his best when he is actively working through his own discomfort on stage, and this hour leans heavily into the tension of a midlife neurotic who has accidentally started succeeding. Filmed during a career high point (the very same month he interviewed Barack Obama in his garage), the set finds him trying to reconcile his historical misery with a comfortable, twice-divorced life of cats and solitude. He claims he is finally winning, but the performance is driven by the familiar, anxious engine of a man who still expects to ruin everything.

Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait at The Vic Theatre in Chicago, the performance features a mix of tight, scripted material and loose, conversational detours. Maron frequently interrupts his own performance to summon an “inner blogger” who live-reviews the set with the critical sign-off that gives the show its title. While this meta-narrative device divided some viewers, it serves as a release valve for his obsessive self-doubt.

The strongest segments ground his neurotic perspective in physical reality, particularly his detailed shame over late-night ice cream binges and the logistical awkwardness of Skype sex. He also addresses his ongoing anger, noting that while he still flies off the handle, he has managed to shorten the distance between the outburst and the apology.
