The Half Hour

Naomi Ekperigin

Comedy Central · 2016 · 30 min

Domestic realities, true crime habits, and an urgent warning for joggers.

Her urgent public service announcement to white women jogging alone through procedural dramas sets the tone early. Ekperigin treats true crime television and domestic routines with the cadence of an office worker forced to pause an email draft to explain basic survival logic. Unwinding to murder mysteries is simply regular evening maintenance, and she pleads directly with every fictional runner named Megan or Lindsay to stay indoors.

Recorded at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans for the fifth season of Comedy Central’s half-hour showcase, the set arrived while she was writing for Broad City and Difficult People. That writer’s room economy carries through the staging. The jokes move without excess windup, whether detailing the logistics of hiding an empty jar of Nutella or explaining why moving in together makes a relationship feel real in all the wrong ways.

Her relationship material avoids easy romance. She walks through her engagement by treating the proposal like the finish line of an exhausting corporate campaign, detailing every third party who had to intervene to get the ring on her finger. When she talks about adopting her husband’s last name, the motive is strictly practical: she wants debt collectors to assume they are dealing with a sensible accountant.
