Doug Stanhope steps up to the microphone with a lit cigarette and a drink, opening the show by informing the audience that their city is an overpriced shithole populated by miserable people. He explains that he would rather be performing at a tiki bar in Costa Rica, but happy people do not need comedy. He then exploits a legal loophole to chain-smoke through the entire set, framing his stand-up as a theatrical performance to bypass the indoor ban. It is an actively hostile environment, and he thrives in it.

Recorded at the Gotham Comedy Club in New York City in 2007, No Refunds catches the comic fresh off his stints hosting The Man Show and doing late-night commercials for Girls Gone Wild. The broadcast originally aired on Showtime and earned him frequent comparisons to Bill Hicks. Rather than polishing his act for premium cable, he leans into his vices. He notes that even his friends in recovery programs admit he is funnier when he is drunk. The set list takes aim at the concept of national pride, the sanitization of modern culture, and the pointlessness of working a miserable job just to buy things you do not need.
