Poppin' the Hood!

Identical twins Randy and Jason Sklar do not do the traditional comedy duo routine where one acts as the straight-faced anchor to the other’s manic energy. Instead, they operate as a single, hyper-verbal unit, trading punchlines like an echo chamber. On their debut stand-up album, Poppin’ the Hood!, they bring this tag-team approach to a series of fast-paced, observational routines that target the low-rent corners of American media.\n\nRecorded over a week in March 2003 at the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and released in February 2004 by Stand Up! Records, the album caught the brothers at a pivotal career moment. They were transitioning from experimental TV projects like MTV’s sketch show Apartment 2F to hosting ESPN Classic’s cult sports-comedy show Cheap Seats, which debuted later in 2004. The 55-minute set leans into their Midwestern suburban roots, focusing on the cultural detritus of the era. They mock the forced banter of morning zoo radio hosts on St. Louis station KSHE95, target late-night infomercials for the Bowflex, and run through a high-speed simulation of a local TV helicopter traffic reporter trying to cover a slow-motion car chase.
