Comedy Central’s Pulp Comics series operated on a simple premise: taking a comedian’s stage material and visualizing the jokes as produced short films. Paul Provenza anchored the 1996 series premiere, breaking up his live set with narrative video sketches that acted out his routines.
At the time, Provenza was heavily established at the network, having just finished a run hosting the daily interview show Comics Only. The television broadcast bypasses the usual theater setup entirely, instead cutting back and forth between a crowd and a film set to experiment with how a punchline gets delivered.
