Filmed at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre in 2003, Live: Animals was Gervais’s debut solo stand-up outing. He was at the absolute peak of his early-career fame, having just conquered British television with The Office. Though he lacked the stage experience of his contemporaries, he leaned into a cocky, playground-bully persona that made him feel like a smarter, slightly more secure cousin of David Brent.

The performance is loosely structured around nature and evolution, framed as the biology lessons David Attenborough was too polite to broadcast. Gervais wanders into lengthy, sarcastic readings of the book of Genesis, riffs on the absurdity of Noah’s Ark, and throws in cheekily tasteless jokes about Stephen Hawking.
