Hangs Up the Helmet

Roy Chubby Brown

Universal Pictures · 2015 · 75 min

The patchwork-suited working club veteran takes a supposed final bow.

Clad in a patchwork suit and aviator helmet, Royston Vasey plants himself behind a piano to run through a familiar barrage of gutter jokes, marital hostility, and filth. He does not soften the delivery or update the sensibilities; the entire exercise is designed to wallow in the crude mechanics of working men’s clubs.

Filmed in August 2015 at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington, Cumbria, the special was marketed as the end of an era. For decades, Brown had bypassed television entirely to build a massive direct-to-video empire, selling millions of cassettes and discs as annual stocking-fillers to an audience mainstream broadcasters ignored. By 2015, council cancellations were becoming routine, but the Workington room was still packed with regulars trading insults with the stage.

Contemporary reviews noted that the release was not his strongest and offered nothing to convert skeptics, though Brown confirmed to the room that the helmet was only coming off for cameras, not the road.
