Nobody who picked up this tape in late 1995 was confused about what was inside. The pilot’s helmet, the patchwork suit, and a barrage of seaside-postcard filth delivered at top volume were an established annual ritual. The premise remained constant: an auditorium packed with fans eager to hear an abrasive northern comic shout every four-letter word in the book while targeting marriage, bedroom failures, and municipal decorum.

Alistair Pirrie directed the set in Blackpool for PolyGram Video, timed for the lucrative pre-Christmas VHS market. By late 1995, the man born Royston Vasey had managed an improbable pop crossover, peaking at number three on the UK singles chart alongside Smokie on a re-recorded version of “Living Next Door to Alice.” Mainstream television broadcasters still refused to air his stand-up, and local councils regularly debated banning his stage tour from municipal halls, but his direct-to-video operation shifted massive numbers regardless.

The routine relies on old music hall mechanics, turning sheer hostility into community singalongs propped up with piano accompaniment and broad, dirty one-liners.
