A hyperactive set on British awkwardness, marriage, and growing up.
Watching Kane on stage is like seeing a track athlete who happens to be delivering a sociology lecture. He stalks the floor without pause, contrasting the expressive physicality of Mediterranean cultures with the repressed stiffness of the British psyche. His premise is straightforward: the British stay thoroughly bottled up until a weekend binge unleashes total chaos.
Recorded at London’s Vaudeville Theatre in September 2015, the performance caught the comic at a pivot point in his career. After winning the Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2010 and spending several years as an energetic presenter on BBC Three, he was turning forty, newly married, and deliberately stepping away from the dyed hair and eyeliner of his earlier circuit persona.
Alongside routines about male emotional reticence, Kane zeroes in on the day-to-day friction of married life, playing up the cultural clash between his own Essex upbringing and his wife’s Manchester roots. A routine about the torment of an insomniac sharing a bed with a partner capable of dozing off anywhere gives the hour its most recognizable domestic observations.
