Pizza Face

Sasheer Zamata

Seeso · 2017 · 60 min

Sketches, animation, and stand-up from the former SNL cast member.

When Sasheer Zamata asks the crowd to guess which Disney character she played during a college summer job, an audience member immediately shouts out Princess Tiana. Zamata pauses to appreciate the unearned certainty before revealing the truth: Disney had not animated Tiana yet, and Zamata spent the summer sweating inside a giant Pluto suit. That moment of relaxed crowd work sets the tone for an hour that does far more than standard club stand-up.

Titled Pizza Mind (and frequently mislabeled as Pizza Face), the hour arrived in March 2017 on NBC’s short-lived comedy streaming platform Seeso. Zamata was wrapping up a four-season run on Saturday Night Live, where she had been hired midseason following public scrutiny over the cast’s racial makeup. The sketch show rarely handed her material that reflected her point of view, making this project an overdue showcase of what she could do on her own terms.

Filmed at the Civic Theatre in New Orleans and directed by Chioke Nassor, the production leans into her theater roots. Rather than staying anchored behind the mic stand, she peppers the set with animated vignettes, cutaway sketches, and a musical segment featuring rapper Jean Grae. Her material moves between casual street harassment, aging parents, and an argument that America functions less like a melting pot and more like a pizza where the toppings refuse to mix.
