The Half Hour

Sean Donnelly

Comedy Central · 2015 · 30 min

A loud, joke-packed half hour about marriage and physical decay.

Sean Donnelly knows he looks less like a stand-up comedian and more like a guy who should be pouring concrete. That physical contrast powers his set, where the burly Long Island comic yells with frantic precision about failing diets, domestic compromises, and sleep apnea. Taped at the Royale in Boston in June 2015, the performance aired during the fourth season of Comedy Central’s half-hour series and coincided with the release of his debut album, Manual Labor Face. By that point, Donnelly was already a regular fixture in New York clubs and late-night television, having logged appearances on Letterman and Conan. On stage, he skips conversational audience banter to keep the rhythm fast and the energy at a high simmer. Rather than projecting cool detachment, he leans directly into self-inflicted misery, running through the frustrations of trying to slim down and the grim realities of early married life.
