This Isn't For You

Tiernan Douieb

Comedy Dynamics · 2018 · 63 min

A brisk London club set about internet noise and Icelandic post-rock.

Tiernan Douieb’s central argument is simple: modern life, particularly online, is entirely too loud, and humanity would be better off adopting the solitary calm of Iceland. His theory on why Icelandic music sounds ethereal is that with only a few hundred thousand people on an entire island, nobody bangs on the wall to complain when someone plays an electric guitar with a violin bow.

Recorded in a London comedy club basement and released on streaming services by NextUp in 2018, the set captured Douieb during a busy run across the British circuit. At the time, he was balancing daytime sets with Comedy Club 4 Kids, writing jokes for Frankie Boyle, and hosting his weekly Partly Political Broadcast podcast.

Douieb delivers his frustration with upbeat cheer, offsetting misanthropy with self-deprecation. Across the hour, he jumps between social media rage, household spiders, and the indignity of eating melted raclette cheese at a music festival. Contemporary reviews noted that his fast pace kept the room engaged, with The Metro highlighting his affable political style.
